Empty Head

While moving around, can a person think?

I was watching a volleyball match. Many things were happening within a short amount of time and I was having a hard time trying to understand the state of the game. Even as a spectator or observer, figuring out what was happening took time. Players in action, do they think about their situations and next moves? Or is it just their instincts? They have to respond quickly, right? Are their heads empty or processing information? Shit, I want to know.

For me, when I am doing fast-paced action, my head is empty. For example, when I am playing table tennis, I only look at the direction of the ball. I can’t even think about my situation. I completely rely on my instincts. I can’t process information in my head while doing fast-paced action. Maybe that’s why I always lost.

When I am taking no action such as sitting on a chair to write, I can think. My thoughts wander. But, when I am thinking, I forget my surroundings. When I am too deep in my thoughts, my brain demands physical movements like walking. Yeah, I can process information in my head while doing slow-paced actions. For me, processing information in the head is inversely proportional to the pace of action I am doing.

In a volleyball court, for a player, there is a lot of information. Reading and using them to the team’s advantage may lead to victory. Let’s say players can read the information. Each individual with a different perspective, how do they coordinate? Well, they have roles and responsibilities so that they can cooperate. But, being able to connect beautifully needs a lot of practice together.

These are lines from haikyuu. “You need to know the current state of the game and your teammates’ conditions.” “We’re nothing if we don’t cooperate. A chemical synergy happens when one encounters the other. Even this very moment is giving birth to other encounters that will change the world. Maybe in some far, remote country, maybe on the other side of the planet, maybe at an ordinary volleyball club at an ordinary high school, or maybe in a northern countryside on a small island in the east, encounters like that are happening.”

For a fast-paced game player, how does he process enormous information (understanding the state of the game, knowing teammate’s conditions, necessary movements to connect with other members) in his head all at once? Is it something that I will never understand?

Normally, my head is empty. No wonder a person with an empty head like me enjoys individual games.

Here is a question, “Normally, is a person’s head empty or processing information?”

Anyway, I love haikyuu very much.
